One of our sons is “Director, Enterprise Performance and Stability” for the largest single health carrier in the United States. In English, he is one of the top computer gurus for the No. 14 company on Fortune magazine’s top 500 companies.
As such, he was one of the nation’s top Internet Technology experts called in to repair the failed Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) website during the Fall and Winter of 2013..
Last year, he missed Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve at home.
He is still called away on a regular basis from his main job to help solve the latest repair or maintenance trouble spot.
A short time ago, our son made some public comments about the Internal Revue Service computers. The IRS? What the heck does the IRS have to do with Obamacare, I exclaimed to myself. Our son was way too busy installing patches for me to bother him, so those questions have gone unanswered. Until now.
The lead article in today’s local newspaper describing how the “IRS grapples with budget cuts” caught my undivided attention. Locally, the IRS employs over 6000 people, so the article went into some detail. It was long enough I didn’t read EVERY word, but a couple of paragraphs jumped out. They directly answered my questions.
WHAT DOES THE IRS HAVE TO DO WITH OBAMACARE?
For some filers, this tax season brings added complexities due to implementation of the Affordable Care Act. “Most people will only have to check a box on their Form 1040 return to indicate they had health coverage,” (John) Koskinen said. “But some filers claiming exemptions from coverage, those without coverage, and those with premium tax credits may have questions.” (Koskinen is head of the IRS.)
WHAT DO THE IRS COMPUTERS HAVE TO DO WITH OBAMACARE?
“I’d like to get into the early 21st century,” Koskinen said of updates he’d like to see implemented so that the IRS could deliver services in much the same way banks do. “To be running a system with applications running when JFK was president makes no sense at all,” Koskinen said, adding that they still store data on magnetic tapes.
Questions answered. By the IRS boss himself.
Our son? He’s being audited.
